Oki, Microsoft Unit Tie Up in Telephony

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese telecoms equipment maker Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. and the Japanese unit of Microsoft Corp. said on Wednesday they will jointly develop computer telephony products and services for corporate users.

The companies said in a statement that the collaboration was aimed at integrating Oki's computer telephony systems with Microsoft Windows server software and the U.S. software giant's ''.Net'' Internet strategy to provide unified services including call distribution, messaging and Internet-based communications.

Oki said it would establish a 100-member project team to work on development and technical support for the joint products and systems.

News in the morning that Oki would announce a tie-up with Microsoft spurred a jump in its shares, which were up 4.62 percent at 544 yen at 11:40 p.m. EST Tuesday, compared with a 1.2 percent drop in the benchmark Nikkei share average Oki rose to 553 yen late in the morning, a one-week high.

Oki's shares have bounced since hitting a 17-month low of 439 yen on Jan. 12.
